In a unanimous vote on Wednesday evening, October 21, 2026, the Timpanogos School District Board of Education officially approved a districtwide grade reconfiguration set to take effect for the 2027–2028 academic year.
Under the newly approved plan, the district will transition to a standardized structure consisting of:
Elementary Schools: Grades K–5
Middle Schools: Grades 6–8
High Schools: Grades 9–12
District leadership emphasized that this structural update aligns Timpanogos School District with the most common school configuration model nationwide, positioning students for enhanced academic, social, and emotional growth.
Proactive Planning and Timeline
By voting to approve the changes now, board members and administrators are ensuring that school leaders, educators, and staff have nearly two full school years to prepare for a seamless transition.
"Our focus is on creating robust schools to cultivate joyful, thriving students," said Superintendent Dr. Joe Jensen. "Evaluating what makes schools robust led us to determine that these grade reconfigurations have the potential to strengthen our schools at all three levels. Making this decision now gives our school leaders and teachers the time they need to prepare for a smooth and effective implementation."
Key Educational and Development Benefits
Expanding High School Opportunities (Grade 9 Move): Moving 9th graders to high school campuses will provide earlier, equitable access to high school graduation credits, Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathways, advanced foreign languages, visual and performing arts, athletics, Advanced Placement (AP), and Concurrent Enrollment (CE) pipelines. The shift also establishes consistent four-year student cohorts, unifying school culture and transportation.
Optimizing Middle School Development (Grade 6 Move): Transitioning 6th graders to middle school enables the district to establish a dedicated 6–8 middle school model tailored to early adolescent academic, social, and emotional needs.
Elementary Balance: Moving 6th grade out of elementary buildings provides local elementary schools with greater spatial and operational flexibility to balance class sizes.
Consistent Feeder Patterns: The transition moves the district toward consistent "pure feeder" patterns from elementary to secondary schools.
Support for Families and Next Steps
As the district works toward the full launch in Fall 2027, leadership is continuing to evaluate potential boundary adjustments and facility usage.
To support incoming 6th, 7th, 9th, and 10th graders transitioning to new campuses, TSD is developing dedicated welcoming and support frameworks. Additionally, the district has sent out a Parent Support Toolkit to help families discuss these upcoming changes with their children.
