Sego Lily Elementary has been officially named a Purple Star School by the Utah State Board of Education. This distinction is reserved for campuses that go above and beyond to welcome and assist military-connected students.
"Achieving the Purple Star designation affirms our commitment to every child who walks through our doors—especially those whose families serve our nation," said Principal Helena Mueller. "Military families face unique challenges, and we're proud to stand beside them with programs that foster belonging, resilience, and academic success."
Student-Led Transitions
At the heart of Sego Lily's efforts are the BEAK Ambassadors, named for the school's guiding values—balance, Endurance, Awareness, and Kindness. A team of four to six trained sixth-grade leaders personally greets each new military-connected student, offers campus tours, and checks in throughout the semester to ensure a smooth social and academic transition.
Staff Prepared to Serve
All faculty members complete annual training on military children's social-emotional and academic needs. The next professional development session, scheduled for August 8, 2025, will equip staff with updated resources provided by the Alpine School District communications team and best practices for supporting students experiencing deployment cycles or frequent moves.
Honoring Service and Sacrifice
Sego Lily is introducing Military Recognition Day on November 11. The event will invite students with family members in uniform—active, retired, or fallen—to display a cherished photo during a school celebration. Local service members will conduct a flag-raising ceremony, and classroom activities will highlight the contributions of the armed forces.
Why It Matters
By earning the Purple Star designation, Sego Lily underscores the school's belief that recognizing and serving military families enriches the learning community. "Our students gain powerful lessons in resilience, patriotism, and empathy when they see us honor those who protect our freedoms," Principal Mueller added. "This designation is more than a badge—it's a promise to keep putting people first."
