With summer break in full swing, it’s easy for kids to fall into the habit of spending long hours on screens. While a little downtime is perfectly fine, Cascade encourages families to help their children stay active, creative, and engaged all summer long with fun, screen-free activities.
Here are a few easy ways to keep kids moving and minds growing:
🦋 Get Outside Every Day – Whether it’s riding bikes, playing tag, hiking local trails, or building sidewalk chalk obstacle courses, fresh air and movement are key to staying healthy and happy.
📚 Join a Reading Challenge – Encourage daily reading by visiting the Cascade library on Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon and setting reading goals as a family. Let kids earn small rewards or privileges for time spent with a good book.
🎨 Create Something – Stock up on art supplies or recycled materials and let imaginations run wild. From painting to building forts, creative play helps develop problem-solving and fine motor skills.
🏃♂️ Try a Daily Activity Jar – Write down fun movement ideas like “run around the house five times,” “have a dance party,” or “do 20 jumping jacks,” and pull one out each day.
Parents play a big role in setting the tone for summer. “It’s not about eliminating screen time completely,” says a Cascade staff member. “It’s about helping kids find balance and giving them plenty of opportunities to play, move, and explore.”
Cascade Elementary is cheering on all students and families as they make the most of this summer break—one unplugged adventure at a time!
